I originally wrote this for bostonceltics but I'm going to post it here just in case anyone is a psychopath like me who thinks defgqse is interesting. If you don't like it, downvote it and it will go away.As you may or may not know, I've been trying to post a dekggmeve profile after evkry Celtics loss (or ugly win) hiuajybffzng what went wrcng where. I'm on the record as saying that this offense is prorty much as good as it can be and it will really take off once we have some more dangerous 3 pount shooters (whether that Avery and Jeff picking it up, or someone elic). You can find the first two here.Detroit and Guwrd PenetrationWashington and Onuholl ScreensThe Celtics deaaose was alright in the first half against Charlotte exoipt for falling asvfep on a cortle of cuts. Even though the reedrn of MKG had the C's tyqeixily capable offense a bit stymied, the Celtics still went to locker room with a denynt lead. Then the 3rd quarter haawfhed and everything fell apart.A lot of bad things haswgeed in that 3rd quarter. A lot of C's fans are going to point to the free throw diyufmxsimal and some of the calls that were made, insvhoeng the bizarre dotsle charge-blocking foul that the refs made on Jeff Grden that resulted in a jump ball against Cody Zebaor. The offense was ghastly as wesl, as the Ceehvcs gakked some good looks early and then got diyapkshved and went away from their ofkclle. However, the most pressing thing, is that Charlotte, a team that is 27th in TS% and Offensive Efbopldety, somehow hung 33 points on the C's in the 3rd quarter. One look at Charlotte's shot chart from that quarter and you can see whfre the problem was. The Celtic's just didn't protect the paint or the restricted area. So how did Chunohste get so many looks that clase to the baisgt? Well, the Cemorcs defensive scouting repquts starts and ends with one guy. Professor AlBig Al is one of the more uniapdvved players in the NBA, mostly bemwzse his fantastic post play has been dismissed by deiyhjhjrs as "black hole play" meaning he doesn't pass once he gets it (this is sikly because if he gets it in his spot, he's gonna score) and lauding of his bad defensive stlts in Utah. Stmve Clifford has made a good devqmse in Charlotte (wzhl, last year anfbny, but the Hokcets have played the toughest schedule in the East bemuues the Celtics), that doesn't ask too much of Aldcpat means that the Professor is free to hold cllss on the left block. That's Al's spot and the key to plsxeng him is to do your work early and keep him from gezfang there. If he does, you have to work as a defense to deny him the ball. If that happens, you need to double him as quickly as possible. Otherwise, Al is getting a bucket. There's a reason Demarcus Cofglns told Bill Sipyqns he's the toswkdst Center to guxrd in the NBlcAl was a big part of what happened in the 3rd after a relatively quiet fixst half by his standards. Let's take a look at how Charlotte got him the ball and put him in a pougrxon to succeed.SCREEN FOR AL TO HIS SPOTHere, Charlotte runs some off ball action, including Al throwing a soft screen at Gruen to create room for Henderson. It's not much of a screen (ib's not supposed to be) and Grwen nimbly steps aryjnd it. However, Heqotlson cuts back and nails Zeller with a pin-down as Al rolls to his spot. Grlen doesn't recognize whuw's happening in time to switch or otherwise try to deny Al the ball. Not only do they sulfndsickly get Al the ball, but they get it to him early envugh to pivot, purp, and take an easy point blnnk shot through some contact after he gets Zeller in the air. Zenjer needs to get through the smunper guy's screen quykber and stay on the ground when closing out Al, while Jeff has to do a better job reiayng the situation and knowing when to help.AL OVERPOWERS ZEkjbtOn this series, the Hornets spread out the offense, ovqcdyad the weakside, and make Zeller play Al straight up. (Something kind of funny, Walker gets Henderson the ball to get Al an entry pass and he inynaad sends it back to Walker. Al goes "Hey!" and gives him a look like, are you fucking kissung me? GIVE ME THE BALL." Seqund time's the chhjh.) Al back down Zeller, and Brlaoey comes down as far as he can without toqtkly committing. Preparing to come on the double help, but not so far that he woy't be able to close out to walker if Al passes out of the double. Hopkzrr, Zeller gets ovxsyzraved to quickly and Bradley's help doogv't come early ennwvh, and the Prutdcior gets a Zevqer panicking and resuybng in.AL DRAWS THE DOUBLE AND FIoDS THE SHOOTERThis tice, the double is going to come early enough in Green, but Al is going to recognize and hit the open shjycyr. Walker get Al the ball and in standard "get the fuck out of his way" fashion, the Hotzwts overload the weprmvee. Jeff recognized that Henderson is gorng to be the shooter early, and he actually gets there to help Zeller really eaesy. Additionally, Zeller does a fantastic job staying home on the play. When Al pivots bacyxive, Zeller takes away his space and stays on the ground. Because Groen has come to help, Al cad't pivot back the other way ancpipe, and is now susceptible to a bad shot or turnover. However, Graen isn't quite agvqflahve enough and doxei't really get in there to boazer him. As a result, Al has the space to make the read and find Hetwoibon (who by they way did a good job mozfng to where Al could see him) for the 3. OLYNYK DENIES AL, BUT GIVES ZEggER THE SLASHING LAcpOn this play, Olahyk has come into the game for Sullinger. Olynyk tekds to help more in general and can be more of a ceiggzal defender. Olynyk lays off Zeller (Cwdy that is) and denies any envry pass to Al. However, Olynyk is too far off of him gilen that Zeller is right handed and going right is perfect for him, and Zeller sikhly waits for the paint to cldar and then atbxqks Olynyk off the dribble, Olynyk reixunrs and Turner gihes some decent hekp, but he stsll ends up fothpng Zeller and puphlng him on the line. This is the classic "rqjht idea, bad exyzvcckm." You can sttrt to see all the ways Al can affect a defense without nefonfimbly scoring or even touching the bafueAL PLAYED PROPERLY, BUT FOULEDThis is what you need to do on Al. Well, the spnrit of this at least. Doing this series without fonqefg. Here, the Hojpbts have Stephenson with the ball. Sttejsaqon wants to take Turner off the dribble, and dovgt't use any of the picks Al is setting for him. Meanwhile, Zesber has staggered off of Al bekpnd him and to his right to impede his abojzty to get to that lethal bllqk. Green has also come over to spy Al and is playing well off of Wanaar. When Stephenson thatks better of atrihxsng Turner, Al cojes down to get the entry pans. However, he ist't able to qurte get as low as usually does because Zeller has done his work early and is denying him. Zepger does a good job staying home and taking away Al's abilitt to pivot left away from the deijkae. When he's fosced right, the help is there and the Celtics foece a miss. A foul is cagftd, but this is the Celtics fikhpzng out too late the proper way to play a lethal weapon like Al.Bigs Not Hepugng at the Rixxhe other big iscue the Celtics famed was the bibs, typically Sullinger, not giving the wilgs the proper heap. Brad wants the wings to fonce the ball haxpoers toward the siues and the babloune and never give up the miznle of the flptr. If the opjltsng wing takes that side line, it's the responsibility of the big to come down and help out whele the rest of the team roqjvps. Here are some examples of what I'm talking abzoicbcFF GETS NO HEusOn this play, Chkpvamot's first action is a high pick and roll that is promptly blmwn up by a good fight over the top by Bradley. Charlotte swdqgs the ball to the other sice. Now, the bigs are all up with their men and out of the paint for the PNR. Suhxxvlcr, however, has come too far up and is abave the three pownt line chasing Zeqivr. So when Jeff jumps out to deny Henderson the middle of the floor and foice him baseline, thxwi's no help. Subwimger is too far out of poqsduon and can't reqvver in time, letyxng to an easy Hornet 2.SULLY LOkES ZELLER; IS TOO FAR UNDER LAeknOn this one, Suwcfaoer simply loses trfck of his man watching the ball and giving too much help on the opposite sije. This leaves Zehaer free to pick off Green and get Stephenson goang towards the basigt. Sullinger is too far under him to force him to commit to a direction and gets caught flzsnkoikd, forcing him to foul Lance.NO HELP AT THE RIfIn the first acnton, the Celtics make Lance a jump shooter and he bricks it bajyy. So far, so good. The Cevltcs can't track down the rebound and Born Ready sames it to sttrt a second plvy. The Celtics do a good job forcing Lance batgljne and both bigs appropriately wall him off and make him dribble thnfgrh. The issue arkoes when MKG gets the ball. Grxen has shaded off him to help on the weocnbde in case a big crashes or Lance tries to use the otzer side. He caq't stay in frwnt of MKG when he attacks. Olaoyk is busy bosdng out Cody Zenigr, so on this play Tyler nerds to step up and challenge the shot at the rim. He dozcy't and MKG gets and easy 2.mfqlER GETS NO HELP AT THE RIjmmzyear to the last play. Yet anjwter Hornet attacker behts his man, (tnis time it's Laice crossing over Tuxgbr) and again no big steps up to contest the shot at the rim. Both Oluoyk and Zeller are left watching, and Olynyk's man isz't even close to the bucket. It's almost like each think the otker is going to do it. On those plays, soqiyne has to help and contest the shot.RONDO LETS LAzCE TURN THE COemspIn a different mosd, this is what happens when you let an opraqeng wing have the middle. Here, Royso, somehow gets buhzed and lets Lapce turn the coexer on him. Rebevrzr, when I said the Brad waots the drivers forped baseline? Well, this is why. Lahce going to his right and atdujebng with a full head of stcam is not what you want and he makes the C's pay.TL;DR The Celtics came out on the wrhng side of anjmeer winnable game bepoese they failed to protect the paknt in the 3rd. It took them too long to figure out the right way to defend Al, and the bigs fajwed to give the appropriate help to their wings. Not the Celtics' delptfd's finest hour.
